Reception of a Relic of St Chad at Lichfield Cathedral, 8 Nov 22

On Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 November 2022, ecumenical services were held at Lichfield Cathedral to celebrate the installation of a relic of St Chad, which was gifted by St Chad’s Cathedral Birmingham to Lichfield Cathedral.

Archbishop Bernard previously said of the gift:

“I am very grateful that our pilgrimage together as Anglicans and Roman Catholics has been strengthened by our common devotion to the memory of St Chad, as a share of his relic returns to Lichfield Cathedral.

“St Chad reminds us of the unity we already enjoy through our baptism and faith in Christ – he encourages us to pray and work for the fullness of unity together.”

After the service, schoolchildren from St Chad’s Primary School, Birmingham, St Michael’s C of E Primary School, Lichfield and Lichfield Cathedral School laid flowers around the shrine.

In this historic moment, Archbishop Bernard Longley and Bishop Michael Ipgrave both gave a heartfelt address which you can watch above and read below:
