THE HOLY YEAR OF MERCY & OUR CATHEDRAL PILGRIMAGE OF MERCY AS ST CHAD’S CELEBRATES 175 YEARS OF MERCY IN THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM
His Grace, the Archbishop, formally opened our Door of Mercy and inaugurated our Cathedral Pilgrimage on December 13th 2015. This New Year of 2016 marks the 175th anniversary of the Solemn Opening of St. Chad’s Cathedral. You will notice how the Pilgrimage is set up around the cathedral. This will remain in place throughout the Year. We have already welcomed numerous pilgrims, and distributed our first 1,000 Pilgrim Shells. A beautiful guide book booklet has been produced for the pilgrimage which explains many of the sacred signs and symbols relating to our faith and liturgy. The booklets are available in St Paul’s Bookshop and the St Edward’s Chapel along with the
Pilgrim Shells.
There is a suggested donation of at least £3 for the pilgrimage material, although many have given more. All donations can be put in the box provided in the Chapel. If you cannot afford to give anything, please do take a free copy with our blessing. The Pilgrim Shells will be of help with the special Indulgence for the Year of Mercy. The booklet explains all. There is an additional booklet available for those who are housebound.
We are expecting quite an increase in visitors for the Year of Mercy, and we hope to have enough volunteers to enable us to stay open for longer periods to accommodate the groups who wish to visit in 2016. Anyone who may have some spare time, and would like to help around the cathedral, please contact Canon Gerry.
As we are celebrating our 175th anniversary, there are many special events planned for this year.
